This refers to the ability of new technology to run software designed for an earlier iteration of hardware. The subject is of increasing importance as technology platforms are developed and improved at much faster rates than before.

Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred to or from a web site or server within a prescribed period of time..

BCC
Blind carbon copy. A way to copy e-mail to someone without other recipients knowing about it.

Beta
This is a stage in the development cycle of software. When a product is described as being a “beta version” or “in beta”, this is an indication that it has reached a feature-complete phase of its development and is ready for testing or a wider distribution outside of the development studio.

Bio
A short personal description used to define who you are, what you do or what you like.

Bit
The smallest element of computerized data. A full text page in English is about 16,000 bits.

Blacklist
A list of "bad" email addresses (spam) or inappropriate Web sites.

Blocking Software
Computer programs that filter content from the Internet and block access to some web sites or content based on specified criteria.

Blog
Short for web log. A regular online commentary from an individual or group of individuals. Often appearing in diary format, blogs can contain anything from topical information to musings on a variety of topics to politically skewed rants.

Bookmark
To reference an Internet site in a browser for easy access at a later date.

Bot
Also referred to as Internet bot or web robot. A software application that runs automated tasks over the Internet. Bots are extensively used in search engine updates, commercial trading applications, and online video gaming activities.

BPS
Bits Per Second. Measurement of the speed at which data can be transmitted.

Broadband
A fast, permanent connection to the Internet. Examples of broadband services include cable modem, DSL, and satellite.

Browser
A program that lets Internet users access information on the Web. Internet Explorer™ and Firefox™ are a couple of the most popular browser programs.

Bulletin Board
An area of a web site where users can post messages for other users to read.
