Video Game of the Week – 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

The opening match of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup finals is just 45 days away and excitement is already building around the world. For the first time, South Africa will play host to the 32 qualifying nations and the 64 scheduled matches are expected to attract the largest global television audiences in history.

To mark the occasion, EA Sports today released 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, the latest edition of its top-selling FIFA Soccer video game franchise.

2010 FIFA World Cup basically uses the same innovative programming and graphics package that was such a revelation when it was introduced for FIFA Soccer 10, released last October. The 360-degree player control system produces fluid and realistic on-field moves, which can be spectacular without ever feeling gimmicky or over-the-top.

Of course, the big difference between 2010 FIFA World Cup and FIFA Soccer 10 is the setting and the magnitude of the occasion. The World Cup atmosphere is infused into every aspect of the game, from the crowd shots to the on-the-money commentaries to the truly amazing celebrations for the winning team.

The beauty of 2010 FIFA World Cup is that every team gets a chance to compete and win. And we are not just talking about the 32 finalists. All 199 teams that entered the qualifying tournament are represented in the game and you can adopt any of the aspiring nations and see if you can bring them to ultimate glory.

While playing in Story of Qualifying mode allows you to pick a team and rewrite history, other features like Captain Your Country put you in control of a single player. You can also head online with the Xbox and PlayStation versions and participate in the Battle of Nations.

Continuing a welcome trend in video gaming, EA has added features like Two Button controls to simplify the game for beginners. While there may not be enough gameplay add-ons for FIFA Soccer veterans, the World Cup atmosphere will more than make up for it.

For anyone interested in the beautiful game, 2010 FIFA World Cup is a great way to spend a few hours while we wait for the real action to begin.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is rated "E" for Everyone by the ESRB. Check out their video game  ratings and content descriptors at ESRB.org
