Three great netbooks for Mother's Day

Next Sunday is Mother's Day and what better present to get Mom than a brand new netbook.

Netbooks are lightweight, ultra-portable and convenient. Although they don't have the processing power or screen size of regular laptops, they fit into most pocketbooks and are ideal for checking e-mail, surfing the web and handling the family's media.

Plus, the major manufacturers have finally realized that the compact size of these "Mommy-books" gives them a golden opportunity to add a little style to the usual blacks and grays of the notebook world.

So here's your chance to accessorize your always on-the-go, tech-savvy Mom with one of our three current favorites:

Acer Amethyst Aspire One

We love the Acer Amethyst Purple Aspire One netbook. With a 10.1-inch screen, easy-to-use keyboard and up to 8 hours of battery life, it's the ideal companion for Mom to take with her wherever she goes. It features the latest Intel Atom processor and comes with 1GB of memory and a 160GB hard drive, enough to store her videos, photos, music and more, with plenty of room to spare.

The Aspire One has a built-in webcam and microphone and has three USB ports, along with a VGA port, standard headphone and microphone jacks, and an Ethernet port. It also has a built wireless card for connecting to a local network or hotspot.

The Aspire One comes with Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition and retails for the unbeatable price of $298 at Walmart.

Toshiba mini NB305

If Mom's looking for a little more power under the hood, then Toshiba's mini NB 300 series will get her as close to a laptop as a netbook's size will allow.

Starting at just $349.99, the Toshiba mini NB305s feature a 10.1-inch screen, a full-size keyboard and touchpad, 1GB memory and up to 250GB hard drive. It comes with a built-in webcam and microphone, an additional speaker for better sound quality and a top-of-the-range battery life of up to 11 hours.

For the environmentally-conscious, the NB305 features a mercury-free backlit display, along with a host of power-saving features. It comes in a choice of four colors: Frost White, Java Brown, Royal Blue and Black.

Available at ToshibaDirect.com

Butterfly Lovers HP Mini 210

Looking for something a little different? Try the limited edition Butterfly Lovers HP Mini 210 from Vivienne Tam. Described as "a lightweight digital clutch", the Butterfly Mini was featured on the runway at last year's Fashion Week and is set to make an appearance in the upcoming Sex in the City 2 movie.

Weighing in at just 2.7 pounds, this butterfly-adorned netbook features a 10.1-inch LED widescreen display, 5.5 hours of battery life, up to 320GB hard drive and 2GB of memory.

The signature HP mini keyboard is 93% the size of a normal QWERTY keyboard and it has a VGA webcam that turns into a mirror at the push of a button, so Mom can freshen up on the fly!

Available at Amazon, Neiman Marcus and Best Buy for around $600. (Pricing varies.)

Great reviews - while I'm not looking for Mom, I am considering getting a netbook for my teenage son to use at school. He has a laptop, but it is a large one and I think it would be much easier to take a netbook back and forth than that big one and still be able to do what he needs for school activities for the most part.
