Buying an outdoor camera

Summer's here and that means the pool, the beach and the great outdoors. And, of course, you need a camera with you at all times to capture the memories and show the folks back home what they're missing.

This isn't the time or place for expensive DSLRs or other cameras that can't take a few knocks. It's also beyond the scope of most smartphones, which are great when everything's bright a sunny but underperform in weak light. (Strangely, they also don't react too well to water and a few grains of sand!)

What's called for during the hot and busy summer months is an easy-to-carry, easy-to-use camera that can take the heat and a few bumps and still come back for more. And, oh yes, it has to be waterproof!

If you're in the market for a rugged camera that will also produce great pictures, here are five of The Online Mom's favorites:

Sony CyberShot TX5
The TX5 is built extremely tough. Its airtight construction is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and freeze-proof. Just slip it in your pocket and you can capture the world in style, no matter where you are. 3-inch wide LCD touch screen, 4x optical zoom, 10.2 megapixels and Sony's iSweep Panorama mode.
MSRP: $349.99
Best price: $290.00 Google Products

Fujifilm Finepix XP10
The FinePix XP10 is also 'four-proof' – waterproof, freeze-proof, shockproof and dustproof. The FinePix XP10 sports a 12-megapixel CCD sensor, a 2.7-inch high-contrast LCD screen for better viewing in bright sunlight, and a high-precision Fujinon 5x periscopic optical zoom lens with a reinforced protective lens barrier. The FinePix XP10 is only 21.7mm thin, and retains the rugged design of a conventional compact camera.
MSRP: $199.95
Best price: $129.95 Amazon

Canon PowerShot D10
The Canon PowerShot D10 probably has the best image quality of all the waterproof cameras, as well as very good durability specs (waterproof to a depth of 33 feet and able to withstand 4 foot drops).  Plus, the PowerShot D10 has all the high performance features you expect from a Canon digital camera, including  12.1 megapixels of resolution. The one drawback? The DC10 is big – too big to slip into a pocket. But if picture quality is your #1 priority, this is the way to go.
MSRP: $329.99
Best price: $245 Top30Deals.com

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2
The Lumix DMC-TS2 features 14.1-megapixels, a 28mm wide-angle lens that extends to a 4.6x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch Intelligent LCD with a wide-viewing angle, and a built-in LED light for shooting in dark situations such as underwater. Can also shoot high-definition video. Waterproof to 33 feet, shockproof to 10 feet, freeze-proof to 14° F (-10° C) and dustproof.
MSRP: $399.95
Best price: $299.99 Amazon

Pentax Optio W90
The Pentax Optio W90 "adventure cam" is waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and cold-proof. It features a 12.1 megapixel sensor and wide angle 5X optical zoom. Waterproof to 20 feet for reliable underwater photography. Shockproof to 4 feet to withstand the rigors of extreme use. Cold-proof to sub-freezing temperatures for use in chilly wintery, snowy activities. Dustproof for use in dry, sandy climates.
MSRP: $329.95
Best price: $241 Google Products
