Consumer Reports confirms iPhone 4 problem
In an article published today on its web site, Consumer Reports has confirmed that there is a problem with reception when using the new iPhone 4. In particular, when a finger or a hand touches a spot on the phone’s lower left side, the signal degrades significantly – enough, say Consumers Reports' engineers, to drop a call if you are in an area with a weak signal to begin with.
Consumer Reports reached its conclusion after examining the performance of three separate iPhone 4s in a controlled testing environment. They also tested several other AT&T phones the same way, including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. None of the other phones had the signal-loss issues of the iPhone 4.
As a result, Consumer Reports has withheld its coveted “Recommended” citation for the iPhone 4, even though it outshone rival smartphones and its own high-scoring predecessors on numerous features, including quality of display, length of battery life and the front-facing camera for video chat.
The Consumer Reports’ findings call into question the recent claims by Apple that the iPhone 4’s signal-strength issues were largely an illusion caused by faulty software that mistakenly displays more bars than it should for a given signal strength.
The results for the other smartphone models also indicate that the iPhone 4 reception problems cannot all be blamed on the much-maligned AT&T network.
Although it’s one that’s likely to make image-conscious iPhone owners and Apple executives cringe, Consumer Reports did come up with an affordable fix: cover the external antenna gap with a piece of non conductive duct tape!
