Pandora adds ‘Genre’ stations
One of our favorite web sites just got even better. Music streaming service Pandora
this week added a feature which allows users to create ‘radio stations’
by genre. Up to now, it was only possible to create stations by
inputting a specific artist, song or composer.

lists 20 different alternatives – everything from Blues or Country to
Indie or New Age. Each different genre is broken down even further to
help narrow your choice. For example, Rock includes Classic Rock, 70s
Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and three other sub-categories. Altogether
there are over 100 different stations to choose from.
will still allow for personalization, allowing listeners to use the
familiar “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” buttons to further customize the
type of music they want to hear. Pandora hopes the new capability will
offer listeners a way to get more variety in a station without having to
spend time building artist-based mixes.

creator. “We wanted to find a uniquely Pandora way to address this
consumer need so we created a number of genre stations that are
carefully seeded with relevant songs and constantly refreshed with new
