Video Game of the Week – Gold’s Gym Dance Workout

If you go to the gym on a regular basis – or even if you are just an occasional visitor – you usually end up making a choice between a static workout – weights, bike-riding, elliptical, etc. – and more flamboyant dance-based routines. I suspect that if we all had the time and the self-confidence, most people would opt for movement. Everyone loves to dance and dance-based workouts make you feel, well, just better!

Gold’s Gym Dance Workout, released on August 17 for the Wii, is strictly for the get-up-and-move crowd. Learning from their own mistakes and those of others, Ubisoft has jettisoned any attempts at satisfying both the dance enthusiast and the more traditional gym rat and has gone for all-out, fast-paced, heart-pounding movement. The result just might be the ultimate workout video!

Gold’s Gym Dance Workout teaches you steps and moves to various styles of dance, while also burning calories and tracking your overall fitness. After inputting your age, weight and height, you select a workout plan. The game will log your overall progress, the amount of calories you burn in each aerobic exercise, and the various achievements you are able to unlock as you play.

In addition to basic instrumental music and rhyme components, the game features more than 30 popular songs to dance to, including I Will Survive, I’m Too Sexy, Material Girl, Just Dance, Good Vibrations, and many others.

The game features many popular Latin dance styles, including samba, salsa, reggaeton and meringue, and a variety of different workout activities. Holding either a single Wii Remote or two, you follow the on-screen visual and audio prompts of your chosen personal trainer who guides you through dance routines in time to the music. Your aerobic dance performance is scored based on how well you follow the rhythm and execute moves in a given routine.

An in-game calendar records long-term data on your health progress and provides helpful suggestions for different dance activities. Gold’s Gym Dance Workout is also compatible with the Wii Balance Board, making it possible to incorporate additional step-exercises alongside the various dance moves.

Beyond dancing, there are other mini-games and activities to explore, including boxing, bull riding, marathon running, sword fights, and karate. The boxing mini-game even includes matches against a kangaroo!

Gold’s Gym Dance Workout is rated “E 10+” by the ESRB for alcohol references in song lyrics and mild cartoon violence in boxing games. Check out their video game ratings and content descriptors at ESRB.org
