The Madden Curse
With the new football season set to kick-off next week, technology web site TechTrends
does a great job of documenting the “Madden Curse” – the apparent bad
luck that befalls anyone who appears on the cover of the latest edition
of the best-selling Madden video game.
year, the game’s publisher Electronic Arts features a top player on the
cover. The player is usually coming off a career year with high
expectations for a repeat performance. Unfortunately, as TechTrends
points out, not one of the 14 players featured on the cover since 1999
has come close to replicating their previous season’s form and many have
suffered serious – in some cases, career-ending – injuries.
Hearst (broken ankle), Dorsey Levens (injured knee), Michael Vick
(broken leg), Shaun Alexander (broken foot), Troy Polamalu (knee) –
these are just a few of the Madden honorees, who were once stars of the game but who suffered immediate setbacks as soon as they agreed to be the featured player.
fans of the Super Bowl-winning New Orleans Saints have every reason to
be nervous as their team prepares to face the Vikings in next Thursday’s
opener. Saints quarterback Drew Brees is coming off a record-breaking
season and was clearly the top choice for this year’s cover.
sure if he was asked, Brees would say “Curse? What curse?” and maybe
he’s right. However, I suspect it’s an endorsement deal that many others
around the league were happy to miss out on!
