Video Game of the Week – Metroid: Other M

It’s hard to believe that the first Metroid video game was released twenty-four years ago. Since that time, the Metroid series – and its cold-hearted but eminently likeable female protagonist, Samus Aran – have found a special place in the hearts and minds of at least two generations of gamers.

The original Metroid games – there were three in 8 years before a long hiatus – were often thought of as a cross between the Mario franchise, with its side-scrolling, platform jumping action, and the Legend of Zelda series, with its highly-charged mixture of fantasy, adventure and puzzle-solving. When the Metroid releases resumed in 2002, it quickly evolved into a classic first-person shooter series, where players lived and almost died with Samus as she protected the galaxy from Space Pirates and other alien creatures.

Metroid: Other M now takes the franchise into new and unchartered territory. For the first time we get to know a lot more about the previously enigmatic Samus, as she reveals her feelings, her flaws and her continued motivation for her role as galactic bounty-hunter.

The new game, which represents a collaboration between Nintendo’s legendary Yoshio Sakamoto and the team behind the Ninja series, combines dynamic storytelling, fast-paced gameplay and dramatic cinematography, so you almost feel like you are directing a movie instead of playing a game.

Another change is that the player has a choice between adopting the now traditional first-person shooter role or using the Wii Remote to switch to a third-person perspective. In fact, a combination of the two styles of play is highly recommended if you want to take down all the enemies and rapidly progress. This slightly unnatural mode of gameplay takes a little getting used to but a tutorial at the beginning of the game provides some help.

The cinematic effects in Metroid: Other M will be a new experience for most Wii owners and the non-stop action, occasional flashbacks and complex plots lines will take a lot of concentration. However, the overall impact is of a well-designed and brilliantly executed game; one that is a worthy addition to a venerable and beloved franchise.

Metroid: Other M is rated “Teen” by the ESRB for animated blood and sci-fi violence. Check out their video game ratings and content descriptors at ESRB.org
