Video Game of the Week – Wii Party

Just when you thought it was time to put away all those controllers and concentrate on homework for a few months, here comes Nintendo with yet another party game for the Wii. Now, you may think you already have enough party games to last you a lifetime, but Wii Party will definitely prove you wrong!

Wii Party features 13 different party game modes divided into three categories: Party Games, House Games and Pair Games. Most of the game modes can be applied to the 70+ mini-games that make up Wii Party, giving any combination of players from 1 to 4 an almost endless variety of gaming experiences.

The Party Games category, in which four players compete against each other, is closest to traditional board games. Players roll dice and move their Mii characters around with specific goals in mind. Party Games include Board Game Island, Globe Trot, Bingo, Swap Meet and Spin-Off.

House Party Games focus more on the players’ interactions with the Wii Remote and involve some novel uses of this amazingly versatile device. For example, in Hide ‘n’ Hunt, one player hides all the Remotes in different areas of the room, while others have to find them within a certain time limit. Time Bomb involves players delicately passing a Wii Remote around the group. Shake it too much and the bomb explodes!

As the name implies, Pair Games are designed for just two players, and include memory games, quizzes, balance games, and even a game to see if you and your friend have the right chemistry!

The sheer variety of the Wii Party games is what makes it so special. It combines action games, puzzle games, skill games…virtually any kind of game you can think of. Plus, Nintendo has wisely steered clear of Mario and friends for this compendium, allowing players to customize their own Mii characters instead.

Wii Party is clearly designed to sit on the shelf alongside Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Wii Play, and it does a nice job of complementing the other three. With those long winter days just around the corner, Wii Party is the perfect addition to the collection!
