New government web site takes aim at bullying

A new US government website has been created to provide information to kids and young adults on bullying, ways to stop the harassment, and where to turn for help; it also gives helpful tips aimed at parents, educators, and others in the community.

The website StopBullying.gov is managed by the US Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with the US Department of Education and the US Department of Justice. It was showcased at this week’s Conference on Bullying Prevention hosted by the White House.

“No school can be a great school until it is first a safe school,” said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan during the closing session of the conference.

According to recent studies, approximately 30% of young people in the United States are targets and/or perpetrators of bullying. Popular targets of bullying include children who are obese and those with psychiatric and/or chronic medical conditions. In addition, a recent survey found that 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth are harassed at school.

The new website is aimed at adults as well as children. Under its “Parents” section, it includes information on “bully-proofing my child,” what to do if your child is actually the perpetrator, and how to work with schools and local communities.

“Parents can play a key role in preventing and stopping bullying. But first they have to know if their children bully or are bullied by others. Many parents do not discuss bullying with their children, and many children do not raise the topic with their parents,” says the website.

While “Recognize the Warning Signs” and “How Do I Get Help?” are featured prominently in all sections of the site, information is also provided on cyberbullying, state policies and laws, and violence prevention program directories.
“Everyone can help prevent and stop bullying. No matter who you are or who you represent, you can influence lives and maybe even save a life,” the website says.

"WHYMEAN" is an anti bullying youth mediation program I've developed, offering a unique problem solving approach to this widespread problem , providing comprehensive programming, actions planning, tools to be utilized by all those who may need it the most, with decreased bullying behaviors, increased peer and parent awareness, improved peer socializations evidenced within elementary, middle and high school settings. I am so pleased to introduce you to "WHYMEAN" programming, because it is a program that truly makes a difference, not just talks about results, but actually achieves results. Having worked with students for over 20 years, I have learned that in order to truly eliminate bullying from our schools, we have to get to the core of the issues, provide supportive efforts, systematic problem solving efforts, tools to all those who may need it the most. Throughout my years of working with students I continue to believe that often times, it can take just one person to believe in you, to see what may not be apparent, that may help to make a world of difference in the life of a child. It is this belief that continues to motivate and inspire me on a daily basis. Herein, lies the essence, creates the foundation for my "WHYMEAN" anti bullying youth mediation program. I would welcome the opportunity to introduce "WHYMEAN" programming to school district administrators New York State wide, so that I can explain how and why "WHYMEAN" programming works so effectively, can train clinicians and faculty to understand how to utilize this program, can be customized to fit individual school resources, together we can do it, working together we can help to eliminate bullying from our schools. "WHYMEAN" programming, let me show you how... Sincerely, Dina Horowitz, L.C.S.W. Please feel free to contact me at my website http://whymean/wp-admin or dina_horowitz@yahoo.com
