Web Site of the Week: November 10, 2008

Wee Web is a fun new tool for sharing photos, videos and stories about children, making it easy for parents to keep friends and family up-to-date with what’s going on in their kids’ lives.

There are already lots of great online options for sharing your kids’ memorable moments but, by adopting a simpler and more practical approach, Wee Web has a chance to be different – and a lot more useful.

Creating an account and getting started on Wee Web takes less than five minutes. Once you are logged in, you can:

  • upload and share photos and videos;
  • share stories, complete with title; and
  • select the specific people who are allowed to view your offerings.

In addition – and perhaps the major differentiating feature of Wee Web – is the update or “micro-blogging” tool. Using this, you can post updates on what’s going on in your kids’ lives via text-based messaging – similar to Twitter. (Like Twitter, you are limited to 140 characters.)

Your chosen circle of family and friends receives an email along with your update.  They can choose to see the update either on their home page – which puts all the pics, videos, and stories from the kids they’re following on one page – or on their “Friends’ Kids” page.

Your child’s network of followers can even upload their own content and leave comments on any of the individual updates. Those friends and family can also specify how often they want to receive updates via email – instantly, occasionally, or never (ouch!).

Where Wee Web stands out is its simplicity. For grandparents, uncles, aunts and godparents who might get numerous emails and attachments about their families’ kids, the non-intrusive update style that Wee Web offers is a big plus.

Its features are strictly limited, which is precisely why it’s such a great tool. There are none of the complicated apps required by other sharing sites, which can end up drowning the user in the details of blog creation and customization.

If you’re still wondering why you might want to use Wee Web instead of Facebook, which is now the world’s largest photo-sharing site, Wee Web provides a cute Top 10 list of the reasons why.

The #1 reason to use Wee Web?  The most important people don’t use Facebook: Grandpa and Grandma!

Right now, families that join Wee Web will have a free subscription for life.  But there is at least a tentative plan to charge a subscription fee in the future, so jump on board now!
