How to get started with Google+

Google’s new social network, Google+, is barely six weeks old but it has already attracted 25 million users, according to data released yesterday by web-tracking service comScore.

That makes it the fastest-growing web site ever. To put this growth in perspective, it took Facebook about three years to get to the 25 million visitor mark, while Twitter took just over 30 months.

For the most part, this meteoric growth has been achieved using a unique invitation-only launch model, which means that potential users have to wait to be invited by existing users before they can log on and start playing around with the service.

But this “stealth” approach has resulted in a certain amount of head-scratching once that invitation arrives. Mainstream users might be forgiven for thinking that Google was more concerned with creating a buzz among influential early-adopters than teaching the basics of how to get started with the new service.

Luckily, a number of third-party ‘How To’ videos have started to appear, including the one above from social media agency Room214. This excellent six minute tutorial takes you through the essential  steps for setting up your Google+ account, and explains how each of the main Google+ elements can be used.

What the video doesn’t do is address the many privacy issues surrounding Google+ and show the user what options are available to make sure that information and images reach only their intended audience. Tomorrow we will run through those privacy options, so you not only know how to use Google+ but how to use it securely.
