Choosing the right PC

As the gift giving time of year approaches, many of you have asked for advice on how to choose tech gifts for the family and, specifically, how to choose a PC. Although there is no one-size-fits-all solution, the choices available for great value Windows 7 PCs have never been better.

When you are buying a PC, always consider how it’s going to be used. Are you looking for a desktop for the home or something that needs to be ultra-portable? Is it going to be an entertainment hub or is it mostly going to be used for work or school projects?

Although it’s always worth going to the store to check out what’s new and what’s on offer, here are a few suggestions to help get you started:

1.    If you are looking for a great entry-level laptop for your child, then a Dell Inspiron 15 (starting at $399) could be just what you are looking for! With a 15.6-inch HD display, an IntelCore processor, 4GB of memory, and a 640GB hard drive, this stylish and sturdy laptop packs as much punch as your child will need and then some. Running Windows 7 Home Premium, the Inspiron 15 is good for homework, networking, web surfing, movies, and more.

2.    If you are buying for yourself or for a business traveler in the family, one of my all-time favorites is the ASUS Zenbook. Starting at $999, the head-turning Zenbook is ultra-thin and ultra-light. And it’s not just about looks. The Zenbook’s multiple ports, ‘instant-on’ functionality, and other time-saving features make it the perfect workhorse for the busy professional.

3.    Looking for something with a bit more battery life? They try the Sony VAIO S Series (starting at $699). As well as being perfectly portable, the S Series abandons bulky batteries for a thinner, lighter power pack that can last up to 14 hours with the optional large capacity sheet battery.

4.    And if you're looking for a PC to be the central hub for the home (mine is in the kitchen), then go for the all-in-one touchscreen Sony VAIO L Series desktop. Whether you want family entertainment or somewhere to store important records, address books, recipes, messages, calendars, and everything else you need to run the family, then the VAIO L (starting at $799) will be the family’s best friend. Plus, it’s so beautiful, it will make you smile every time you walk through the door!

If you know your budget and what you are going to be using it for, finding the right Windows 7 PC goes from being a challenge to a charm. Just make sure you don’t have to wait in line to use it once you get it home!
