Tech Report – Droid Razr Maxx

One of the biggest complaints about Android phones is their battery life. If you consume only average amounts of data, it is rare that you can get through an entire day without a recharge. Despite being able to match the iPhone in almost all other areas, this is the one disadvantage that repeatedly shows up in comparative testing and user reviews.

However, that could be about to change with today’s introduction of the Droid Razr Maxx from Verizon, which claims a staggering 21.5 hours of talk time or up to 15.8 days of battery life on standby. (The iPhone 4S equivalents are 8 hours of talk time and 8.3 days on standby.)

To accommodate the enhanced battery, Motorola has made few concessions in terms of the phone’s design. At 8.99 mm, the Razr Maxx is not as thin as its Droid Razr cousin, but it is still thinner that the iPhone. And it still has the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, which is becoming almost standard on this latest generation of Android super-phones.

Among the phone’s other features are a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a massive 32 GB of memory (16GB built-in and 16GB on a pre-installed microSD card), and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capability. The Razr Maxx also includes an HDMI Mirror Mode output jack, so you can watch those videos on the big screen. There is also a front-facing HD webcam for video chat.

The phone runs on Verizon’s lightning fast 4G network and includes a full suite of Google and Verizon apps, along with the new MotoCast app, which lets you stream your music, videos, pictures and documents from your home or work computers. You can also use Motorola’s Webtop app, which allows you to connect the phone to a larger screen, keyboard, and mouse for a more productive work environment.

The phone ships with the Android Gingerbread operating system but will be upgradeable to the newest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) at a later date.

The Droid Razr Maxx costs $299.99 with a two-year Verizon contract. Nationwide talk plans start at $39.99 per month, with an additional $20 for unlimited texting. A smartphone data package will cost $30 per month for 2GB of data.

The phone can also be used as a mobile hotspot for up to eight W-Fi-enabled devices (5 devices on 3G networks), although that service will cost an additional $20 a month.
