Web Site of the Week: December 1, 2008

Ever wished you spent less time on the computer and more time with a good book? Well, now it’s possible to do both.

DailyLit, an 18-month old web site, is a book club for people on a tight schedule but who are never too far from their laptop, BlackBerry or iPhone.

After a very quick registration process that asks for an e-mail address and not much more, the site allows users to start downloading books in easily-readable, easily-manageable chunks. The idea is that the reader will have 10 or 15 minutes a day when they can take a break from the regular routine and relax with a good book.  How better to do that than just call it up on the computer right in front of them!

DailyLit currently has over 800 free books and about 500 books available for purchase, although they have ambitious plans for adding another 20,000 titles over the next couple of years. The current selection of free titles includes classics from authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare, as well as self-help and “how to” books.  Titles for purchase include many recent releases and selection is made easier by breaking the current inventory down into over 80 helpful categories.

Once you select a title, you can choose to have the installments delivered via e-mail or RSS feed. You can also vary the frequency of delivery, the number of installments you receive at one time, and even the type face and font size.

How big is a standard installment size? Well, most installments are designed to be read in 5 minutes or less – ideal for a quick break at lunchtime or at the start of a work day. But that’s the beauty of the service: if you find you have more time or you can’t wait to find out what happens next, you can receive additional installments immediately on demand.

Finally, a word of advice: It might not pay to be too ambitious with your first DailyLit selection.  If you always wanted to read War and Peace by Tolstoy but never got around to it, all 663 installments can be delivered right to your inbox at absolutely no charge. However, at one installment a day, you won’t be ready for your next book until late 2010!
