It’s Tax Time – Think About Privacy

I normally don’t think too much about taxes, unless it’s to remind my husband about certain deductions. I feel extremely fortunate to have married someone (also an accountant!) who takes care of this area, as I am hopelessly last minute and disorganized!

However, there are a few things that we should all think about around this time of year and one of them is how to protect your family. Tax time identity theft is a growing problem, so here are a few important tips to remember:

  • Keep your tax information safe — It’s essential to keep your finance-related mail, Social Security Number, and tax details away from prying eyes and out of the wrong hands. Keep your files in a central and safe place and make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date. Also, think about opening an account with a monitoring service for extra peace of mind.

  • Be thorough — This is a great time to get a little nitpicky.  Make sure you are dealing with an honest CPA or tax accountant, and make sure you are providing complete information – your W2, 1099s, your investment information, and more. Be sure to ask someone you trust to give your tax return a final review – two sets of eyes are always better than one.

  • Watch out for tax scams — There are an increasing number of emails and even phone calls from people claiming to be from the IRS and asking for personal or financial information. The IRS will NEVER ask for such information via e-mail or over the phone. Don’t fall victim to these “phishing” scams.

  • Keep an eye out for your refund — Make sure you stay on top of your refund and watch out for those welcome envelopes. Deposit your check immediately. Around tax time, criminals abound and you need to be extra careful.

  • Submit online for safety and efficiency — There’s no longer any need to stand in line at the post office. Submit your return electronically for safety and convenience.

This tax season resolve to be organized, early, and safe. And let us know what you plan to do with your refund!
