App of the Week - Word Mess

By Sarah Combs

I have to admit, I played Word Mess for much, much longer than it took to review it. The game is super addictive and incredibly fun, especially for such a simple concept. If you love puzzle games like Sudoku, crosswords, word scrambles, or just enjoy a bit of a brain tease, this is the game for you. But be careful, you may want to block out some time to dedicate to this engaging and entrapping game.

The player is tasked with finding words in, you guessed it, a mess of words that match the criteria she is presented with. There’s the most basic task of finding one specific word such as “shiny,” “delirious,” and “pit” in the jumble. You can also choose the Category mode where you find words that fit under broader terms such as “ships,” “soups,” and “mythology.”

My favorite challenge is the Rhyme mode, where you have to find words that rhyme with the word you’re presented with. This gets kind of hard! Try finding words that rhyme with “null” in a sea of scrambled words – it can become daunting.

Featured by Apple as the number one staff pick in educational apps, this game is destined for greatness. The user interface and graphics are super clean and eye-catching, and the music is catchy and doesn’t get old too fast. There’s a ton of good stuff going on here: educational, engaging, and fun? It doesn’t get much better than this.

The app was developed by Shalin Shodhan, a graphics programmer for Pixar. He’s a one-person team and it’s so cool to see such an awesome product come from the hard work of one guy with a great idea.

Whether you’re looking for a game to pass some time in the doctor’s office, or wanting an app that’s a bit more educational than Angry Birds for your kids, you’ll find a winner in Word Mess.

Word Mess is recommended for Kids, Tweens, Teens, and Parents (Ages 5 and up) for universal word game fun and basic educational concepts. Find screenshots, reviews and family-friendly ratings for Word Mess and more of the best iPad apps at Famigo.com.
