Tech Report Ė HTC Rezound

For the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of using the HTC Rezound, a media-rich smartphone that runs on Verizonís 4G LTE network. Although the Rezound had been around for a while Ė it was released late last year Ė it remains one of the best of a new generation of smartphones, offering an embarrassment of riches in both communication and entertainment.

The first thing to note about the Rezound is that itís a little beefier than most new smartphones aspire to be. But that extra heft doesnít mean the Rezound lacks style. Instead, there is a feeling of sturdiness and reliability about the phone; a device that you can get down and dirty with, rather than worrying about protective covers and fretting over the tiniest scratch.

The feeling that you are dealing with something special starts with the amazing 720p HD display, a screen so big and bright that watching videos or movies quickly becomes a guilty pleasure. Also taking advantage of that screen are the 8.0 megapixel rear-facing and 2.0 megapixel front-facing cameras. I used the Rezound for still shots, video and video chat and all the images were razor sharp with bright and realistic colors.

But perhaps the centerpiece of the Rezoundís impressive media offerings is its high quality audio experience. The Rezound incorporates the much-acclaimed Beats Audio technology. A Beats enhancement button will boost the volume, deepen the bass, and produce a much rounder and fuller sound than you could possible expect from a smartphone. Every Rezound ships with a pair of red cable Beats ear buds, which are worth around $100 just on their own.

The Rezound I used was running the Android Gingerbread operating system and it came with all the usual Google apps and services, including Gmail, Maps, Google Books, Search, Google Talk and more. It also comes with an impressive array of additional built-in apps, including Blockbuster, Amazonís Kindle reader, Slacker radio, V CAST Music, Verizon Video, VZ Navigator and a selection of games. Everything loads at lightning speed thanks to Verizonís blazingly fast 4G network.

While the Rezound has quickly become my go-to phone for texting, e-mail and the usual productivity tools, itís also the first smartphone that I have truly regarded as an entertainment device. Delivering great music on a morning run, effortlessly streaming news clips and videos throughout the day, or allowing me to catch my favorite shows before I turn out the lights, the Rezound has become a media powerhouse that never leaves my side.

The HTC Rezound is currently being offered by Verizon for just $79.99 after $120 promotional discount. It requires a 2-year Verizon contract and a data package. Verizonís 4G pricing applies.
