Family Movie Night

By Monica Vila

Growing up, I always looked forward to Fridays. And it wasn’t just because the school week was over and I had two whole days without classes and teachers. No, Friday was special because Friday night was movie night – a time when I would huddle in front of the “box” with my two brothers, my mom and my dad and watch whatever the networks chose to serve up.

Of course in those days it wasn’t always a movie. More often than not, we would end up watching The Brady Bunch or The Partridge Family, but the feel-good atmosphere was still the same: it was a time to unwind; a time to put the real or imagined problems of the past week behind you; and, above all, it was a time to be a family.

Fast forward 30 years and I’m pleased to say that family movie night is still alive and well, with another generation of kids happy to snuggle up on the couch. Family movie night may not always fall on a Friday – and Modern Family may have taken over from The Partridge Family – but the idea is just the same: we come together as a family, enjoy a little screen time, and – at least for a short time – appreciate each other’s company.

Of course the one thing that has changed over the years is the enormous choice that is on offer when we sit down in front of the TV. No more flipping a coin to choose between a John Wayne western and a repeat of The Rockford Files. Now with our recently-installed FiOS TV there are literally hundreds of channels to choose from, offering every imaginable type of entertainment.

With FiOS TV you get a choice of three HD packages, all featuring top-quality sports, news, and entertainment programming, and access to 46 commercial-free music channels. There are also additional premium channel adds-on, featuring even more movies, specialty sports channels, and foreign language programming.

And if that’s still not enough choice, then there is FiOS On Demand, offering instant access to 35,000  additional movies, including hot new releases and thousands of free titles. And family movie night is no longer anchored to the living room. Want to watch the end of that movie under the covers? Start recording with a Multi-Room DVR and you can share the movie with any TV in the house!

With so many entertainment choices available for kids these days, it’s getting harder to bring everyone together. Offering more choice and flexible viewing is definitely the way to go. So get the popcorn ready. With FiOS TV, family movie night is back!
