App of the Week – iLearn With Boing: Savannah Adventures
Tribal Nova’s iLearnWith program is a series of game-based learning apps for the iPad, which are designed to help prepare 3-6 year olds for school. Included in the learning program are apps for math, science, language, and literacy. iLearn with Boing: Savannah Adventures specifically encourages math skills, including counting, ordering numbers, and adding and subtraction.
While the iLearnWith program teaches basic skills, the emphasis is always on entertainment and having fun. Savannah Adventures includes three different games: In Game 1 kids help a meerkat prepare a meal by using numbers to match ingredients; in Game 2 they help a cute little frog cross a lily pond by choosing which lily pad to jump on next; and in Game 3 kids have to catch the right number of ostriches and get them on a truck before it leaves.
All three games are timed and the level of difficulty adjusts automatically based on your child’s progress. Kids are rewarded with medals and gifts that can be used in the iLearn With Planet Boing app, which is free to download. Savannah Adventures allows you to create up to four user profiles and parents can track each child’s progress individually. The detailed progress summary also compares kids to other children in their age range and recommends a personalized learning path for improvement.
Despite the emphasis on learning, the games are clearly designed with pre-schoolers and kindergartners in mind. The adorable characters are accompanied by cheery music and vibrant colors, and a child-like voice narrates a friendly and encouraging script. Best of all, Savannah Adventures is intuitive and easy to use and will keep your youngster coming back for more!
iLearn with Boing: Savannah Adventures is recommended for 3 to 6 year olds for developing early math skills, including number recognition, counting, addition and subtraction, ordering, and visual discrimination.
