Taking Your TV With You

The recent launch of the Verizon FiOS Mobile app for Android devices (it was already available for the iPad) has completed a much-awaited transition in our household: every family member can now watch live TV anywhere in the house!

Like many modern households, my family has settled on a rather complicated tech eco-system. While I love all things Apple – I have a Mac, an iPad, and an iPhone – my husband is a big Android fan, owning both a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet. Our two kids share a Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 but are pretty agnostic when it comes to operating systems and will happily grab whatever tablet happens to be lying around.

Raising digital kids means we get all the usual requests for the latest gadgets, but if there is one request we hear more than ‘Can I get a new smartphone?’ it’s  still ‘Can I get a TV in my bedroom?’ Up until now I have resisted, figuring both our household budget and their homework schedules could ill afford the unnecessary indulgence.

But flashing my rarely-used parenting skills is not without its cost. Concentrating all our TV time in the family room means that both my husband and I are subjected to a steady diet of iCarly, Phineas and Ferb, Monsters vs. Aliens, and more. And much as I love Miranda Cosgrove and the gang, it would be nice to sprinkle in a little Food Channel and ESPN once in a while.

That’s where the FiOS Mobile app comes in handy. With FiOS Mobile, you can stream live TV to the iPad and our Android devices anywhere in the house! Not only that, but you can also buy or rent over 60,000 FiOS On Demand Flex View titles. That means your TV and movie watching is suddenly extended well beyond the house – a huge bonus if you are looking to keep the kids entertained on a long road trip.

Expanding live TV to other rooms in the house doesn’t mean I have completely abandoned my parenting principles. FiOS Mobile comes with a suite of easy-to-use parental controls, which allow you to restrict content to a specific age range. And gathering up iPads and smartphones when it’s time for bed is a whole lot easier than collecting additional TVs!

FiOS Mobile has given us complete flexibility in where and when we watch TV, without adding a cent to the cost of our TV and Internet package. That’s the kind of digital revolution I can support!

The Online Mom LLC receives a fee for participating in certain promotional programs for Verizon FiOS. All opinions are my own.
