Tech Report – Casio G’zOne Commando 4G LTE

Most people agree that top-of-the-line smartphones like the iPhone 5S, Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One are wonderful devices, admired as much for their good looks as their feature-rich functionality. But all that brushed metal and high-gloss plastic is not for everyone. Hand one of those phones over to an outdoor enthusiast or an accident-prone 13-year-old and those good looks are more likely to be replaced by a cracked screen, a scratched case, or a water-logged SIM card.

A more rugged lifestyle calls for a more rugged smartphone, and that’s just what you get with the Casio G’zOne Commando 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless.

Although Casio may be better known for its calculators and watches, the NEC Casio Mobile Communications group has been quietly producing smartphones under the Casio G’zOne brand for the last 3 years. It started with the G’zOne Brigade, followed by the G’zOne Ravine, before the original G’zOne Commando was released in April of 2011. This latest version combines all the robust features of the earlier models while adding Verizon’s super-fast 4G LTE network.

The military-style branding for the G’zOne series is no coincidence. The Commando has been ‘ruggedized’ to meet military standards, which means it can withstand spills, drops, dirt and other adverse conditions that might be experienced during outdoor exercises or in other harsh working environments.

That’s not to say that the Commando doesn’t perform well as a smartphone. It runs Android 4.0 (Ice-Cream Sandwich), so it can handle all the tasks expected of a state-of-the-art mobile device – as well as run all those apps that have become so essential for our busy, on-the-go lifestyles.

The Commando features an 8-magapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video chat. It also comes equipped with Near Field Communication, allowing users to instantly transfer photos, files, and web pages to other NFC-equipped devices. The Commando can also act as a mobile hotspot for up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

As well as a selection of useful Google and Verizon apps, the Commando also comes preloaded with G’zGEAR and G’zWORLD, a series of apps that can assist and enhance an array of outdoor activities. You can create a personal map of your travel and sports activities, including photos, trekking records, favorite locations, and more; there’s a pedometer to track distance traveled and calories burned; a layered compass that maps out the terrain; and even a night-sky mapping app to view the constellations.

If you’re less concerned about style points and more worried about having a phone that can keep up with your adventurous lifestyle, then the Casio G’zOne Commando may be just what you’re looking for!

The Casio G’zOne Commando 4G LTE is free with a 2-year Verizon contract. Or you can pay $18.97 a month under a Verizon Edge contract, with the opportunity to upgrade after just 6 months.
