Losing Weight with Help from My Online Friends
By Robyn Wright
A year ago I started on a weight loss journey to improve my health. To date I have lost 120 pounds and I could not have gotten this far if not for the help of my online friends. Using social networks and apps that connect people, I have been able to get incredible support, advice, and a huge group of personal cheerleaders. Having these connections not only encouraged me but it also helped me have an extra sense of accountability in my weight loss program.
Facebook has been one of the best tools for emotional support. While I share publicly, you can also select to only share with certain people by creating your own private lists. Everyone has their own comfort level in how much they share online. However, you should try and stretch out your comfort zone a bit, because people are very happy to share in your weight loss successes and offer support and ideas when you need a boost.
Fitness accessories like the Jawbone Up wristband have coordinating apps that let you create teams of friends. You can share your progress data with each other and cheer each other on. It is easy to find your friends who already have a Jawbone Up by connecting via Facebook and Twitter. The app also tracks your progress so you can see it – trust me, this makes a big difference – and it will even challenge you to meet your goals.
MyFitnessPal is a great app that serves as a diary for your activity, food, and weight. The app is free and is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry! MyFitnessPal also allows you to connect with your friends and has a lot of options for which parts you share and which you do not. This app can also connect with a lot of other health and fitness related apps and devices to keep everything in sync.
There are all kinds of apps and communities available to help you with your weight loss. While you may be a bit nervous about sharing at first, most folks relax as they go along and see how much the support of others can help.
