Best Tech for Super Bowl XLVIII

By Tracey Dowdy

Unless you’ve been living on another planet, you’re probably aware the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos face off for Super Bowl XLVIII this Sunday. Personally, I’m excited about the commercials and the epic snacking I have planned. Apparently the rest of America is on the same page with me, as Super Bowl Sunday is reportedly second only to Thanksgiving for food consumption.

Whether you’re like me and are in it for the food or like my husband who will be coaching with his buddies from a basement recliner, here are a few apps to make the most of America’s favorite unofficial holiday.

Pre-Game:

  • The Denver Broncos web site is an obvious source for anything and everything you need to know about the AFC champs. Their mobile app is free for both iOS and Android. Likewise, the Seattle Seahawks site offers up everything you need to be on top of the roster and ready for kickoff.
  • The official NFL Super Bowl XLVIII web site and NFL Mobile app will give you everything you need to know about the Seahawks and the Broncos. The app includes video highlights from the 2013 season, real time updates from Twitter and Instagram feeds, and activities for kids. After the game ends, the app will continue to add photos, video and a recap of the game. It’s just as good as being there, right? Right?

Live Streaming:

  • Live streaming the game while in the stadium is not allowed, but the NFL has opened live-streaming to everyone outside MetLife stadium. You can go to Fox Sports or FoxSportsGo.com and watch the game online or on some mobile devices. Note I said some. You can stream the game on your iPad but not your iPhone because Verizon owns the rights with its exclusive license to stream NFL games including the Super Bowl via the NFL Mobile app.

Where to watch the ads:

  • Super Bowl ads cost an average of 4 million dollars each, or roughly the amount Peyton Manning made before breakfast this morning. You can get a sneak peek and watch some of the ads here. I haven’t seen them all yet, but what I have seen doesn’t disappoint.

If all else fails, Buzzfeed has some helpful tips on how to make it look like you understand football at a Super Bowl party, like “shushing” people every once in a while so others will think you’re really into the game (but not too often in case someone tries to get you into an intense football conversation); or when to use phrases like “We’ve got to give him some time!” and “We’ve got to put pressure on him!”

Enjoy the game!
