The Mobile Office: Time To Give It Another Try!
By Robyn Wright
Many of us have been using smartphones for several years now. Even as we bought the latest and greatest phones over the years, as cool as they were, they did not always do everything we wanted in the most efficient manner. Because of that, some of us decided that actually working on our smartphones was not worth the effort we had to put into it.
Times have changed though. Our devices are getting better and better, almost daily it seems. If you tried using your device in the past for work and gave up, now is the time to check out all the latest apps and built-in features. I am amazed at how much I can now get done on my smartphone!
Accessing email on a smartphone is now relatively simple. If you have had trouble in past, I would suggest giving it another try. I personally find that the default email apps on my devices work very well to check incoming mail and send quick replies when I am on-the-go. Even if you have a company email address, you should be able to easily synchronize your email on your mobile device.
Cloud storage has made life abundantly easier for working on the go. You no longer have to have a full laptop with you and no need to carry a thumb drive, CD, or other portable storage. Instead, you can store your documents in the cloud and have access to them from your mobile device anywhere. You can even collaborate on documents with others. Sharing photos is just as easy; no more emailing files to yourself all the time.
Even blogging has become much easier. On my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, I can easily log into my WordPress self-hosted blog and make changes or corrections while I am on-the-go. Even short blog posts are easy to do. (I say short only because if I am wordy I prefer a keyboard to type on.) You can approve comments and conduct other administrative tasks no matter where you are.
If you work for a company, check with your IT department and ask for their help in getting things set up and any suggestions on apps that may be useful. For those of you that are self-employed, check with your peers for their recommendations on work-related apps.
Finally, keep an eye out for new apps in your favorite app store. Make it a point to check at least once a week for the latest and greatest apps. You will be amazed at how much easier it is to work on-the-go!
What’s your favorite work-related app or smartphone feature?
