Happy Mother’s Day from WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes

“I’d be lucky if I had half the charisma of The American Dream, my father. I’d be lucky if I had half the natural in-ring skill of my brother Goldust. But you know what I do have? I’ve got a spark plug of a Cuban mother with a work ethic like nobody else.” – Cody Rhodes at WWE Battleground 2013

My father is a WWE Hall of Famer.  My brother and I are WWE Superstars.  However, it is my mother who set the bar for hard work and dedication.  She is the strongest person I know and I feel incredibly privileged to have inherited her determination and work ethic.  It is something I carry with me every day:  to every workout, to every match – both in the ring and in life.  On this Mother’s Day, I want to shine the spotlight on a woman who truly embodies what it is to be a fighter – my mom.

My father is a dreamer and a visionary but it is my mother who knows how to make those dreams a reality – it is all about hard work.  I know that he saw that drive in her and that is what makes their relationship so special.  He may have been the star in the ring, but at home, she makes the rules.

There is no telling my mother an excuse.  She will see right through it.  My first job was working at a bagel shop and one day, I decided to blow it off to go hang out with some friends.  When she found out, she made me feel smaller than I ever knew I could feel, and rightfully so.  I committed to something and I let her down.  She instilled in me what it is to have a job and looking back, I couldn’t be more grateful.  I wouldn’t be where I am today without the example she set.  She is a results-oriented woman and whenever I set out to do something, she held me to it because she knew what I was capable of.

I know my mother is proud of my accomplishments in the ring but what means the most to her is how I conduct myself outside of it.

This industry isn’t always easy. The highs are high and the lows can be low.  But all the while, I turn to my mother and her strength to persevere.  She always says “No one can control your happiness but you.” That is a something I live by.  She reminds me to focus on the positive and keep looking forward and that as long as you work hard and stay dedicated, anything is possible.

My mom is the best friend anyone could have.  She still picks me up from the airport every Wednesday and I cherish those car rides where I can talk to her about anything and feel supported and motivated.  I am incredibly proud to carry on the family legacy at WWE.  However, I am perhaps even more proud to say that I carry on my mother’s unwavering will, fiery determination and unparalleled worth ethic.

Thanks, Mom, for teaching me what it is to be a Superstar.

Very well said, I am sorry to say I lost my mom, but her words of encouragement and kindness and love are with me everyday of my life. To the best mom ever, cherish them because you never get another... xoxo from a true Rhodes fan...
