Gadget of the Week – Canon PowerShot SD780 IS

There is perhaps no more confusing category in technology than the world of digital cameras. With potential buyers needing to consider megapixel counts, image sizes, and number of frames per second, as well as new features such as shake reduction, face recognition and distortion control, it’s no wonder most consumers long for a time when all cameras were much the same and you chose entirely on brand preference.

For the last few years, there has some semblance of order in the marketplace as cameras were neatly divided into compact digital cameras (more commonly referred to as point-and-shoots) and digital SLR cameras. Even this division is now becoming increasingly blurred, as HD picture and video capability and some of the other SLR features work their way onto the smaller devices.

Despite all the innovation, most recreational photographers still seem to choose a camera based on three factors – price, convenience, and brand. (Yes, people still have strong brand preferences in electronics – especially when it comes to cameras!) Satisfying all three criteria and then some is a new offering from Canon – the PowerShot SD780 IS.

The SD780 is smaller than most smartphones and weighs in at only 4.5 ounces – easy to drop into a jacket or pants pocket. The camera has a 3X optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD screen, which is plenty big enough for lining up quality shots. Processing speeds are fast and performance is excellent in all conditions, with sharp images and true colors.

Best of all, the SD780 IS shoots incredible quality HD video – a first for a Canon point-and-shoot! Video playback is made super-easy with the addition of in-camera HDMI and USB ports.

With a camera this small, there is always the danger of accidentally hitting the wrong buttons but the design of the SD780 is well thought-out and stylish. Color options include black, gold, silver and red, all in a brush metal finish.

The SD780 IS is Canon quality in a super-convenient size. At a list price of only $279.99, it’s one of the best deals in a highly competitive – and complicated – marketplace!
