Game of the Week – Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Fans of the 1984 comedy classic will love this clever, entertaining and fun game from Atari. Even gamers too young to experience the movie will have a blast with the game play and constant action that is surprisingly faithful to the original storyline.

The script for Ghostbusters: The Video Game was written by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie. The game is set in 1991 and you play a rookie on the ghostbusting team, tasked with testing the latest upgrades and modifications to the legendary proton pack. Voice acting is supplied by many of the original film’s stars, including Aykroyd, Ramis and Ernie Hudson, and includes a particularly laconic performance from Bill Murray.

You and the team explore all kinds of weird and spooky venues in and around New York City, tracking a variety of monsters and meanies. The graphics are superb, with the venues really coming to life and the ghosts hurtling towards you or whispering through the walls! The constant banter from the main characters is entertaining and provides several laugh-out-loud moments!

The proton pack has four different modes, ranging from the default mode, which emits a blast of energy to help you stun and capture ghosts, to a mode that lets you fire off a stream of green goo, with satisfying results. It’s not all one-way action though. Be prepared to take your share of hits and rely of your fellow ghostbusters to get you out of more than a few jams!

Three different developers were used to bring the game to all platforms simultaneously and there are some major variations in game play depending on which console is used. The DS version, in particular, offers a very different experience. There is also an online multi-player component, which allows you to bring your real-life buddies on to your ghostbusting team.

Despite some isolated mechanical problems while playing the game on the Xbox 360 and PS3, Ghostbusters: The Video Game delivers a satisfying experience across all platforms. All in all, it’s a great game for everyone, whether you are a fan of the original movie or not!

The game earns a “Teen” rating – age 13 and older – for the constant zapping and some crude humor in the dialogue.

Publisher: Atari, Inc.
Platforms: Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PC, Nintendo DS, PSP
RRP: From $39.99 to $59.99
ESRB Rating: “Teen” – age 13 and older
