Video Game of the Week: The BIGS 2
If you happen to be one of the many baseball “purists”, obsessed with the history and integrity of the game (leaving steroids aside for the moment!), then The BIGS 2 is definitely not for you. But if you like home runs, outrageous plays and non-stop action, then look no further than this over-the-top sequel to 2K Sports’ excellent 2007 game, The BIGS!
The BIGS 2 focuses on the ‘big’ fast-paced moments in Major League Baseball, with opportunities to go up against MLB legends, play mini-games like Home Run Pinball, and take on a variety of other fun new features. The BIGS 2 tweaks the regular action of baseball just enough to make it flashy and exciting without turning it into something cartoonish and silly.
The BIGS 2 upgrades the original BIGS in a number of ways. Select players have been upgraded to ‘Legendary’ status, giving them legendary power at the plate or speed on the bases that other players don’t have. When in action, they can also initiate mini-games, which can result in extra points and greatly affect the outcome of a game.
The BIGS 2 also introduces the ‘Wheelhouse’, an area in every batter’s plate coverage where their offensive threat is at its greatest. Although pitching to a batter’s wheelhouse will likely result in a hit, strikes and strikeouts there will earn your team additional turbo points. Once you have earned enough points through big plays, you can unlock the Big Bash, Big Heat, and the new Big Slam modes.
Another new feature is Become a Legend, where you are a former star coming off an injury and trying to work your way back to the major leagues. As you meet and beat each challenge along the way, you enhance your status and put together an All-Star team to take on all-comers. Not your average MLB story but a nice nod to the increasingly popular fantasy teams.
Finally, Home Run Pinball makes a return, allowing you to hit towering home runs in some unlikely venues, including Tokyo, Times Square and the Vegas strip!
The BIGS 2 has great graphics, is well thought-out and does what a good sequel should do: not mess with the original but add enough enhancements and new action to make it a worthwhile investment. A great buy for the big kids in the house – and that includes Dad – that just can’t get enough of those Sports Center highlights!
