Video Game of the Week – Bit.Trip Void

Bit.Trip Void is the third release in the innovative Bit.Trip series from Aksys Games for the Wii.

The Bit.Trip series is basically a throwback to the Pacman-style arcade games of the 80s but updated for modern-day game design. Void presents a very different kind of challenge from its predecessors (Bit.Trip Beat and Bit.Trip Core) but remains true to its roots in providing a great test of skill and dexterity along with catchy chiptune rhythms that will stay with you for hours!

In Bit.Trip Void you use the analog stick on either the Nunchuk or the Classic Controller to control a pixilated black hole called a Void. You have complete freedom of movement and the aim is to guide the Void into the path of oncoming black pixels called "beats", while avoiding their white counterparts. Each black beat consumed increases the size of the Void while decreasing the Void's mobility, making it more susceptible to those pesky white beats.

At any time, you can opt to exchange your accumulated black beats for points, returning the Void back to its original size. Thus, once you have mastered the basics, the game becomes all about risk-and-reward strategy: the bigger the Void, the  more black beats you can collect; but bigger also means more vulnerable to white beats, which will shrink the Void and wipe out all your points.

As you successfully consume black beats, you transition to higher scoring modes. As with the other Bit.Trip games, you also encounter a series of bosses (console-controlled enemies) that present ever more demanding challenges.

Throughout the game a hypnotic beat pulses in the background. Collecting dots adds additional tones to the soundtrack and the ever-changing psychedelic visuals will do their best to distract you!

The risk-and-reward nature of the game makes it ideal for beginners and experts alike. If you miss too many black beats or run into too many white beats, there is even a built-in Netherworld, where you are sent for a last chance to redeem yourself before it's game over.

Bit.Trip Void is undoubtedly the best yet in the Bit.Trip series, combining an addictive and fun challenge with compulsive, foot-tapping rhythms. It's also a great deal at just 600 Wii Points ($6) from Nintendo's online WiiWare Store.
