Tech Report – Texting overload
We have become a nation of texters. According to the US Census Bureau, Americans sent 110 billion text messages in December 2008, the latest month for which data is available. This was an increase of 129% over the same month in 2007, suggesting that we may have already reached the 200 billion per month "milestone" as 2009 draws to a close.
For mobile phone users, the number of texts sent or received on a monthly basis long ago surpassed the number of phone calls made or received, with teens texting over 20 times more often than they call.
Our fixation with texting has led to alarming phone bills, record profits for the phone carriers, and major safety concerns, as texters refuse to disconnect even when behind the wheel of a speeding car.
Now comes the ultimate texting aide – an iPhone app that lets you type and text even when you're walking down the street!
Marketed as Type n Walk, the app uses the iPhone camera to let you see what's in front of you, as you hurry between appointments or take a casual stroll at lunchtime. The hope is that a view of what's ahead, combined with a user's natural peripheral vision, will help texters avoid walking into lampposts, other pedestrians or oncoming traffic!
The folks behind Type n Walk are quick to point out the versatility of their app. It works with any program that accepts copy and paste type and is therefore ideal for e-mails, Facebook updates and Tweets, as well as those can't-wait texts!
While it may seem like a lawsuit waiting to happen – it's unlikely to warn users of falling ladders or changing stop-lights – it's another example of our always available, always connected world. Let's just hope they're not working on a follow-up app – Type n Drive!
