Video Game of the Week – Tales of Monkey Island

Lost in the holiday craziness and the endless games of Wii Sports Resort was a very special event for fans of Guybrush Threepwood – the release of the last chapter of the epic Tales of Monkey Island from Telltale Games!

Commencing in July of this year, separate chapters of the five-part game for Windows and the Wii were released through Telltale's own web site, Amazon.com and WiiWare. With the final chapter, the game is now available for download in its entirety and also in a Collector's DVD edition.

Tales of Monkey Island represents the fifth installment of the Monkey Island series and the first to be released in 10 years. (Although the repackaged Secrets of Monkey Island: Special Edition was released earlier this year.)

Fans of the series will not be disappointed with the plotline. During a heated battle with his nemesis, the evil pirate LeChuck, Guybrush unwittingly unleashes a hideous pox that rapidly spreads across the Caribbean turning pirates into zombie-like monsters. The Voodoo Lady sends Guybrush in search of a legendary sea sponge to stem the epidemic but this seemingly straightforward request instead turns into an epic journey of intrigue, suspense and betrayal.

As usual, players assume the identity of Guybrush as they work they way in and out of a series of sticky situations. Tales of Monkey Island is packed with clever puzzles, brisk action sequences and laugh-out-loud moments.

The five episodes take you to settings all over the Caribbean, with the cartoon-style graphics never failing to do justice to the exotic locations. The leading characters are similarly colorful and well-defined. Each of the five chapters has its own tale to tell but the story is evenly-paced and consistent, providing a welcome sense of continuity and familiarity.

Tales of Monkey Island harks back to the heyday of adventure gaming, with a great story, engaging characters and lots of entertaining puzzles. Although there are occasional quiet periods during the game, it never gets bogged down and there is more than enough entertainment to keep you interested throughout the 15–20 hour escapade.

Tales of Monkey Island has an E10+ (everyone 10 and older) rating from the ESRB for cartoon violence, mild language, suggestive themes and use of alcohol.

Publisher: Telltale Games
Genre: Adventure/Puzzle
Platforms: PC (Windows 7, Vista, XP), Wii
RRP: $34.95 (Download plus Collector's DVD); 1000 WiiWare Points
ESRB Rating: "Everyone 10+"
